If you aren’t regularly using sunscreen already give yourself a big slap on the wrist! Sun protection is one of the most important things we can do to prevent premature aging or worse, skin cancer.
I’ve often heard that people avoid sunscreen because they feel like adding those chemicals onto their skin is worse than getting a sunburn -but if you’re using the right sunscreen you shouldn’t have that worry. That’s where the LASPA Natural sunscreen comes in!
LASPA Natural Sunscreen Review
The LASPA Philosophy
[To] create clean and natural sun care products with only the finest ingredients. LASPA products are a safe and effective way for women to nourish and protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun – without the risks that are associated with chemical based sunscreen products.
I was kindly sent the LASPA Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen in SPF 30 and the Daily Sun Protection Sunscreen in SPF 20 to review. Now that the weather has finally warmed up I have made great use of them whilst working on my garden and enjoying lots of sunshine down at the waterfront.
Key Benefits
Both mineral sunscreens are sourced from 100% natural ingredients, hypoallergenic, gluten free, biodegradable and provide broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays.
The Difference between UVA + UVB Rays
It is important to use a broad spectrum sunscreen which will protect you from both forms of UV rays emitted from the sun. UVA rays are what cause immediate sunburns and UVB rays will penetrate deeper into the skin causing issues that we cannot immediately see -like dark spots and premature aging.
Titanium Dioxide is less effective at protecting against broad spectrum rays, therefore LASPA chose Zinc Oxide.
Benefits of Zinc Oxide
The LASPA website lists some really great points about using Zinc Oxide -and why they chose Zinc Oxide as their main UV ray protection.
- Zinc Oxide provides broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Zinc Oxide is effective immediately once it is applied, unlike chemical sunscreen like Oxybenzone, Avobenzone etc.
- Zinc Oxide is absorbed through our pores in very trace amounts, therefore it is not disruptive to our internal health (endocrine system, etc.)
Ingredients
Both versions of the LASPA sunscreen have similar ingredients, though it is important to note the SPF 30 has a higher concentration of Zinc Oxide -for the added sun protection.
SPF 20: Zinc Oxide 14%
SPF 30: Zinc Oxide 20%
Beeswax, Bisabolol (Scent from Camomile), Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Certified Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Isoamyl Cocoate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Tocopherols (Vitamin E)
LASPA Daily Sun Protection SPF 20
This sunscreen easily glides from the tube and blends into the skin very well. As you can see from the above photo, the addition of coconut oil helps to make this very moisturizing. I do not mind using coconut oil on my body, but try to avoid it on my face as it can be comedogenic (if you have acne prone skin.)
I have been wearing this product pretty much everyday since receiving and have yet to receive a sunburn -if you have been following along with my stories on Instagram you may know that I have been spending lots of time working outside.
If you have used coconut oil for moisturizing in the past you will know that it can take a little while for it to absorb into the skin. You will feel this on your skin for about 30-45 minutes after application -with physical sunscreens it is common to feel them for a while on your skin, the whole point is that they do not absorb into your bloodstream.
LASPA Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30
The key difference between this sunscreen and the Daily Sun Protection is the higher percentage of Zinc Oxide. As it has a higher concentration of Zinc Oxide it is also a slightly thicker formula - I found that it did not squeeze out of the tube quite as easily as the SPF 20.
As with the SPF 20 formula this does not have any fragrance. Which is a welcome change to applying sunscreen and feeling as though you are walking around smelling like sunscreen all day (who else hates that!?)
The Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen works just as well as the Daily Sun Protection. You can just expect a little bit more sun protection!
Overall I am very pleased with the LASPA Natural Sunscreens and they are a welcome addition to my sun protection arsenal! I mean, the only important job a sunscreen has is protecting you from a sunburn but the LASPA Natural Sunscreen also gives your skin a healthy dose of moisture. Win-Win if you ask me.
You can find LASPA Natural Sunscreen available at spas around Canada or from Beautysense.ca.
